Palomino baseball team aims to win with home stand advantage
After a tough road trip, the Laredo Community College Palomino baseball team
is looking to post some conference wins with a home stand advantage over the
Alvin Community College Dolphins this weekend.
The Palominos play a doubleheader against the Dolphins on Saturday, March 6
at 12 p.m. before the three-game series ends on Sunday, March 7 at 11 a.m. at
the Dr. Crispin Sanchez Baseball Field, located on the north side of the LCC
Fort McIntosh Campus.
LCC currently stands with records of 5-12 overall and 0-3 in Region 14 South
Zone conference after splitting a non-conference doubleheader against Hill
College by scores of 2-1 and 2-10 on Feb. 24 in San Marcos. In their first
conference match of the season held Feb. 27-28, LCC was swept by Blinn
College in Brenham by scores of 1-8, 5-11 and 2-12.
"The Palominos could never gain any momentum because Blinn kept swinging
the bats well," head baseball coach Eric Gonzalez said. "Even though the
Palominos out hit the Buccaneers in two of the three games, Blinn took
advantage of the base on balls that the Laredo pitching staff gave up. We
swung too many pitches down the middle and walked way too many guys. That
kept our team trying to play catch-up all three games."
Despite the loss, Gonzalez remains optimistic about the Palominos' future. "I'm
still sure that Palominos will be in the playoffs at the end of the season,"
Gonzalez said.
Admission to local games is $2 per adult, $1 for children and free with an LCC
student or faculty/staff ID card.

LCC Palominos look to improve against Cisco

It’s been a roller coaster ride early in the season for the Laredo Community College
Palomino baseball team after initiating its baseball season with a series win against Ranger
College before getting swept by Clarendon College last weekend.
Still, head coach Eric Gonzalez remains optimistic about the future of the Palominos, who
currently stand with an overall 3-5 record, as they prepare to host another home stand
series against Cisco College, a top 20 junior college baseball program.
The LCC Palominos launch their non-conference battle against the Cisco Wranglers at the
Dr. Crispin Sanchez Baseball Field beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday,
Feb. 12 followed by another doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, during LCC’s
Fun Fest and Musicale, which will be ongoing throughout the day on the LCC Fort
McIntosh Campus.
“It was tough losing to Clarendon last weekend,” Gonzalez said. “After going 3-1 with the
Rangers, the Palominos struggled defensively against Clarendon.”
Last spring, Clarendon finished second in the conference to national champions, Howard
Junior College.
The Palominos’ leading hitters against Clarendon included Jeremy Fussell 2-3, Emmanuel
Dipini 4-10, Mike Anzaldua 2-6, Ismael “Smiley” Gonzalez 1-3, and Derek Hagy 4-13. The
top pitchers were Laredoan Sergio Velasquez Jr. with a 2.81 era and Ross Porter
with a 4.43 era.
“(Clarendon) is a good program and that is the main reason they were invited to come play
against the Palominos,” Gonzalez said. “Cisco also is a power house on the diamond. The
opportunity to play these teams will hopefully strengthen the Palominos when we enter
conference play later this season.”
LCC will play one more non-conference match against Hill College on February 24 in San
Marcos before traveling to Brenham, where the Palominos begin conference action against
the Blinn College Buccaneers February 27-28.
Admission to local games is $2 per adult, $1 for children and free with an LCC student or
faculty/staff ID card.
