A.D as in athletic Directors is the
word today across Laredo, Texas.
Both A.D.'s at UISD and LISD were
interviewed by Laredo Morning
Times and quoted they were
thrilled they will have an all Laredo
district in 5A.
Their reason in the story by the
Hearst newspaper dealt more with
the school districts saving money
by not having to travel out of town.
In this case the out of town turned
out to be San Antonio Southwest,
which was regulated to play
elsewhere in the new alignment
UIL issued. The Laredo schools
still will have to face the Del Rio
Rams they remained in district 29
5 A and both schools in Eagle
Pass. Clearly this will only affect
the football programs at both
districts. Of course it is very
obvious UISD gains the edge by
doing this and that is the reason
the UISD A.D. Coach Cruz is all
smiles on having a Laredo only
district.
As it turned out Laredo does have
talent, much to the dislikes of the
rest of UIL Region IV in other high
school sports. Being successful in
basketball, baseball, softball,
soccer,tennis,golf has and was not
a problem being faced with San
Antonio Southwest and the Corpus
Christi area teams in 4A where
Laredo Cigarroa, Laredo Nixon
and Laredo LBJ played the last
two years.
This is a far cry for football fans.
The going back to a Laredo only
district will bring back old wounds
and nagging thoughts that in
football. Laredo teams will have a
hard time coming out of the gate
for the playoffs in the fall of 2010.
The numbers of students tell you
everything. The almighty San
Antonio area football powerhouse
the last eight was Smithson Valley.
They saw the light and know
numbers.
Smithson Valley did not rework the
paper work to mark the box to
remain in 5A and are now a 4A
school and they rather face school
districts with equal number of
students to pull from to play
football. Something lost in Laredo,
Texas since if you look at the raw
numbers you would have had
three of their seven high schools
with 4A numbers and would have
been better off in a 4A system. Of
course this is just in football. What
we are left with is UIL District 29 5A
consisting of teams in cities on the
Middle Rio Grande River region
made up of high school teams
from Del Rio to Eagle Pass to
Laredo.
How fitting the historic Rio Grande
now is the fabric that holds District
29 5 A together. Ten teams in a
district. Was that not something
UIL dreaded in creating? Was it
not in the best interest of a school
district not to have 10 teams for
competition? Was district 29 5 A
the only 10 team only? What is left
is that there is no pre-season in
the fall of 2010 in football. Its
district games from the get go. In
the end Laredo United and Laredo
Alexander will have their bi game
off like they did two years ago on
week 10. While everyone else will
be in their rival game in their last
game of the season.
Does this save the school district
some money in not having the
football team’s travel for the two or
maybe three pre district games?
So, there will be a bi one week,
there will be rival games again
between Laredo Nixon and Laredo
Martin. Also games between
Laredo Cigarroa, Laredo LBJ with
Laredo United South in the mix.
Lovely.
Well we could have a 4-6 team or
maybe two teams with a 4-6 record
making the playoffs in football in
2010. Lovely. The spoiler for the
Laredo only district is going to be
Eagle Pass and Del Rio. So in the
end Laredo may end up with only
two teams in the playoffs in
football. Lovely.
We will miss seeing Laredo
Alexander play teams from Corpus
and San Antonio in the pre-
season. We will miss Laredo
United playing The Mules from
Alamo Heights every year. Keep
the dollar in Laredo. Lovely.
Saving money for the school
districts was the reasons the A.D's
at both school districts said was
important. The school districts
biggest money producing games
are football games.
With so much money being made
at each game at SAC and Krueger
and then throw in some of the
biggest high school booster clubs
in Laredo with more money than
some nations . You figure the
districts could come up with a plan
to limit and correctly allow the
schools with the lower enrollment
play where they belong in 4A. San
Antonio area Smithson Valley sure
did find a way and they are a
power house in football. They
moved correctly to 4A. Laredo
could not.
Now the game begins.
This is not Laredo of five years
ago. This is a Laredo that is now
over 300,000 citizens. (work with
me you know we count everyone
here in Laredo). The call for the
coaches in football all of them not
just the pressures Coach Sanchez
at Laredo United and Coach Lopez
at Laredo Alexander face every
year in making the playoffs and
winning.
Now the coaches at Laredo
Cigarroa, Laredo Nixon, Laredo
Martin will have to face the fire and
will have to face the bigger schools
from Laredo LBJ, Laredo United
South, Laredo United and Laredo
Alexander. Try to look at the
numbers of students at each
school and you see the bigger
picture. The small schools will be
lost in finding football players.
They are mostly small populated
schools barely having enough
players for JV and freshmen
football teams. I now remind you
those small schools will have to
face the biger schools of Del Rio
Texas and Eagle Pass ok only the
Eagles. When will the A.D.'s look
at the coaches in those very small
schools and demand they win
district against count them six big
schools?
There is a difference in saying we
work hard and train hard and
winning. If you’re not winning it
does not count in football. NO
matter how hard you tried as a
coach. The end result if you do not
win in football you’re out. That is
how the culture is in Texas high
school football.
By grouping all the schools
together to form the Glow in the
Dark Middle Rio Grande District
could have started a push for
several things. One the university
campus in North Laredo, you know
the one, the one located just north
of Loop 20. Yes, that one. Will
have to be broken up soon into
two schools and that is going to
happen not by Laredo Politics.
By orders from UIL requirements to
break them up like they did in La
Joya, Texas will happen in Laredo,
Texas as well. Having 20, 000
students in one high school
campus are not healthy. So
Laredo United Longhorns will have
to be broken into two schools. Ok,
they do not have 20,000 at Laredo
United Longhorn campus. So let's
welcome the future Northwest
Miners to district 29 5A.
Now they will understand that
coming 3rd or 4th in district and
making the playoffs is not good
anymore. More if you keep getting
your block knocked off in the first
round of the playoffs. Winning
district should be the goal of every
high school in football. In Laredo it
becomes a tradition now to
celebrate coming in fourth or third
is an accomplishment and should
be treated as doing a good job.
When Coach Lopez went to
Alexander his only wishes each
year has been to win district.
Something he accomplished at
Laredo Nixon several times.
Coming in fourth to him has always
been an issue. He hates with a
passion.
That same passion is very alive at
Laredo United that’s Longhorns
and at Laredo United that’s South
and Laredo LBJ. Coach Villasenor
trust me on this one knows how to
win in any school and he will get
there with LBJ. So to the small
schools welcome to district 29 5A
again.
This time things have changed. All
the other schools have larger
school population from where to
pick for their football teams. LISD
will be short handed and the odds
of winning district the next several
years are well not reachable.
Prove me wrong like they say. But
LISD will have a hard time making
the playoffs the next two years.
SO, if you cannot coach a district
champion the next two years. What
will you do?
That is up to A.D.'s.and those
glorious Principals at each high
school You bet it's their butts that
are on the line as well if you do not
win. Yes, the game has changed,
the school board members are
now looking at everyone to make
the playoffs. If you do not you think
the A.D.'s are going to say. Well
they tried hard, they worked hard,
and it did not work out for the
team. Of course not they will want
results. It's their jobs on the line
with the board members at both
school districts wanting champions.
Why? Because everyone in those
small schools demanded they play
in one school district. The bigger
schools welcomed it for obvious
reasons. They are figuring they
can win against the three small
schools without a problem.
Sometimes you have to be very
careful in Texas High School
Football on what is better. Either
an all city district or a district
composed of equal populated
schools to even the odds on
winning a district title in football.
In this case welcome to district 29
5A home of the biggest campuses
in Laredo, South Texas and the
smallest populated campuses in
Laredo fighting for the same
football title. The odds a small
school winning district in football is
just that as the schools they work
at SMALL.
Prove me wrong will you .......But
here is what is coming down the
Rio Grande this fall.
District 29 5A Pre-season
Rankings these are the top teams
no particular order. It is way to
early to say which of the four is the
best. So I list them in alphabetical
order.
Del Rio Rams.
Eagle Pass Eagles
Laredo Alexander Bulldogs
Laredo United Longhorns
The next strongest team in UIL Rio
Grande District 29 5A are Laredo
United South Panthers followed by
Laredo LBJ. Both will be pushing
to be the fourth place team if any
of the top four teams do not
stumble. There are no LISD
football teams coming close to Del
Rio or Eagle Pass. So winning
district is out of the question for
any of the LISD football teams.
Prove me wrong LISD but your the
main ones that pushed for an All
Laredo District 29 5A .
Someone somewhere at SAC ran
to a quiet place this morning and
were all thrilled an all Laredo
district came into being again. It
was all in the best interest for UISD
teams to have LISD teams in the
mix for an all Laredo district. . The
cigars were lit and the room filled
with smoke quickly this morning at
SAC when UIL announced the new
district make up. Who would have
thought it that SAC is now
showcasing political courses and
showcasing the must see on IMAX
Screen the flick "The Political
Road to District Championships
The Next Two Years" all in UISD
Blue as the End Zones and Mid
Field UISD Logos have.
Appeal is still possible. It could
happen if LISD wants it. For now it
looks like LISD went out of their
way to place their three very small
populated highs schools playing
with the giants in Laredo, Del Rio,
and Eagle Pass. This is not a
knock on the coaching talents at
LISD or the talent with the players.
It is just that there are not enough
of a pool of students at those
three high schools to compete with
the rest of the district.
Prove me wrong will you LISD
show us you can compete with the
big schools in high school football.
I do hope the smoke has cleared
at SAC and those that are smiling
there at least used American made
cigars.

PONY League Youth Baseball
Why Pony League Baseball Will
make Laredo Players Better.
While both Little League and Pony
Leagues have been around a long
time in Americana youth baseball.
The recent change by many Little
League groups switching to Pony
League is now making its way to
Laredo, Texas.
The big difference between the two
youth baseball leagues are stiking.
Pony League allows for the game to be
played as it is played in the higher age
groups with stolen bases etc.
This allows the players to learn the
game and the skills early in their
training.
The second striking difference is that
Pony League leaves no room for any
drastic advantage in age players.
The Pony League is based on a true 2
year difference. While Little League
may at times allow a 3 year difference.
The size of the diamond is based on
age with PONY League and the only
change between the two groups is at
13-14 ages. In Little League the 13-14
are already playing at the 90 feet base
path. While in PONY League they are
at 80 feet.
There is room for both and leagues
that now in Laredo should work on
alternating the fields so everyone has
the chance to play in what ever league
they want.
We expect Pony League to expand
and not just stay in north Laredo. That
would be giving the north side players
advantages over the south players if
Pony League does not take root in
south Laredo.

PONY UP Laredo Pony Baseball
and Softball is The Best Thing for
Laredo. What happen today.
The first thing that caught my Eye as I
went around town asking people I
bumped into what they thought about
the Pony League.
While the vast majority approved the
measure. Several felt it was an issue to
do with politics in Little League up
north.
What I found out was so far from that
thought. First the Pony League will
have a city wide draft . The coaches in
the league are from across Laredo not
just the north.
What is happening is that coaches and
the parents welcome Pony League.
The players are excited they will get to
compete at very high level all year
round not just in league play in
Laredo. But as well in tournaments that
for once will come to Laredo.
Today we found out that regional
tournaments in Pony League have
been awarded to Laredo. In both
baseball and softball.
This is not a sectional as we have
been used to with only maybe four
teams.
This is going to be regional
tournaments with 48 or more teams in
both baseball and softball.
That that means to Laredo is simple.
Our children do not have to travel to
face better competition. Now they
come to Laredo.
Laredo wins . All those teams year
round will have to stay at our hotels
and eat at our restaurants I am sure
they will visit the malls and stores in
Laredo.
So no this is big for Laredo. An it's
about time.
I close with this tough point. Enough of
the Rosa's bashing. I myself do not
always agree with how Richard Rosa's
may do things with baseball But you
know there has to be someone in
charge and let it be Richard than
anyone else in Laredo.
Oh please stop the bashing that they
do it for themselves. That is so far from
the truth. I been around many of you
that Richard Rosas or Hector Rosas
have paid the entrance fee to play
baseball basketball and softball. Not
just as many think in the north.
Both Richard Rosas and Hector over
the years have paid for tournaments
travel meals for players across Laredo
No se hagan los suffers. They have
helped more than most will in a life time.
They are already very successful
businessmen. They have enough
money and maybe it's all just PICE that
drives the Rosa's haters.
Like I said its like anything else. We
cant have everything our way but I am
glad Richard is strong character to
hold off the haters and get things done.
We all should support their efforts and
it is not just the Rosa's. This is an
effort of hundreds of Laredo people
that are parents, coaches,
businessmen, city councilmen and
politicos.
It is here. PONY League for Baseball
and Softball is with us and the loudest
screams of job are from LCC softball
and baseball college program from the
TAMIU softball and baseball programs.
Their coaches love this since it will
help get better trained baseball
players from Laredo with Pony League.
The high school coaches have
embraced PONY League with open
arms. They will in the very near future
start getting better players coming into
their program.
SO lets all work on developing Pony
League in Laredo. I may not agree and
you may not agree on how or what of
this program. But lets all work on this
together and yes stop the Rosa's
bashing.
After all they are organizing something
that will help all the players in Laredo.
To me the Rosa's are a 10.
With Hector on the left and Richard on
the right. A 10 Laredo that is what they
are and what they accomplished with
hundreds of other Laredo-ans in
having Pony League to Laredo.
Let's get it done. AND NOW all that is
left to say is : "Lets Play Two" and
PLAY BALL.

"Everyone Is Happy With The
Basketball Coach Changes"
By Nuno Sciaraffa De Las Lomas C/S
Lrd Sports Wire, 956 Sports, 956 Radio
Let's be happy shall we. Seems that
the basketball fan support power
brokers are happy with their work the
last two years.
How great is this Laredo has three
district high school champions in high
school basketball.
While things at St Augustin are in great
hands and their choice was not as
political as the changes at the two UIL
districts in Laredo several years ago.
For now we have what can be said "te
dije" or "ves things turn out ok" stop
hating.
While the change of basketball head
coach at Laredo Nixon was considered
by the media a bit over the top. When
Laredo United obtained the services of
Coach Ramos. The northern part of
the great county of Webb were smiling
a bit too much. Thinking they had
taken one of the best from LISD.
While we are all in agreement Coach
Ramos is one of the top basketball
coaches in Laredo. LISD went on it's
business and picked perhaps the best
little kept secret when they hired
Coach Pete Soliz Jr.
Few minded in the northern part of the
county whom LISD picked as the next
Mustange basketball coach. Yet, those
close to knowing what high school or
basketball in itself is all about. Knew
that the pick LISD made was
profoundly solid and wise.
The young coach at Nixon had his
work cut for him. In the mist of all of the
things he had to do to get the program
up and running was seen by this
sports reporter as one of the most
brilliant moves ever done to get things
in his corner.
Pete Soliz Jr hired Pete Soliz senior as
an assistant coach to run his freshman
basketball team. Having someone he
can turn to and openly ask and work
things out was the first major move
Soliz Jr made.
Hiring your father as an assistant well
how cool is that. Working with your dad
on something both love dearly the life
of SPORTS and basketball.
When coach Pete Jr finished hiring his
staff. Laredo Nixon had one of the best
kept secrets that a championship was
on it way to Laredo Nixon.
Last night in a gym full of Mustangs
fans shouting and screaming in a
packed gym. A district championship
was won on Mustang soil.
A championship for Coach Soliz Jr .and
his staff his players and school. This is
a victory for LISD who has taken a few
in the "pansa" when coaches have left
LISD to higher paychecks up north.
LISD may not say it but I can. Heres to
you all and in a proud way look north
and pick up our chin as we do in our
culture.
Last night as a J.W. Nixon Mustang
alumni I was proud how the Mustang's
won their championship. All with family
and how cool that Coach Pete Soliz
Senior played for the Mustangs and
was All District as well . Coach Soliz Sr
was in the gym . How many can say
you win a district championship and
you had your dad on the bench with
you?
The Soliz family can and both bleed
Mustang green.
With our CHINS UP looking north all
Mustangs current and past can
proudly sing "to thee our alma mater"
.."forever green and gold".
Nuno Sciaraffa De Las Lomas C/S
