February 9, 2010 District 29
5 A Preview High School
Baseball
Well in South Texas High
School there are no secrets
that stay private long.
While everyone seems to
have already placed the top
teams in district 29 5A in their
minds. Here is something to
ponder the rest of February.
News out of scouts traveling
in Mexico clearly stated that
several key national ranked
baseball players in Mexico
are now in Texas. Not
Sharyland or La Joya like it
has happen the last several
years.
This time around they ended
up in Eagle Pass Winn High
School. Does it change the
prospective on how the
district race will run? Of
course it will.
There are reasons for us to
speculate what positions they
will play. We are sure pitching
will be the form they will show
most when the season
officially starts.
So here is the PRE rankings
for district 29 5 A for the
spring of 2010.
1. Alexander Bulldogs (3
returning pitchers to worry
about) Ok the Dream Team
are now seniors and juniors.
Mario Maldonado and
Marshall Cano are going to
have a great season Division
1 and II NCAA teams have
shown interest in both and
several other Bulldogs as
well. They want the season to
be over to get a final review
on all of them. The overall
hitting at Alexander is going
to improve. Mario Garcia
remains one of the best
managers in Texas High
School baseball. He has a
new assistant coach in Coach
Martinez (Former United
Longhorn assistant coach).
How the world turns. He was a
coach with me in Little
League in the All Stars when
his son was only 9 years old.
His son J Coss is now at
NCAA DIV II Texas A&M
International on a baseball
scholarship as a freshman.
2. Laredo United Longhorns
3. Eagle Pass Winn > Yes
Winn
4. Eagle Pass Eagles (Fight
with Winn)
5. Southwest Dragons (not
enough)
6. Laredo United South
Panthers
7. Del Rio Rams (no scouting
not sure)
7 Laredo Martin Tigers (lost
key pitchers to graduation)

Coach Gomez Laredo United Coach Colin Laredo Nixon
February 19, 2010
"Play Ball Laredo Style"
For 956 Sports, 956 Sports Laredo, 956 Radio and Lrd Sports Wire
Well, I will not hide it. My favorite sport to cover is baseball. I visited Kruger Field to take in 7
innings between Laredo United and Laredo Nixon.
Since, it is not March yet, the aroma of fresh cut grass at the Kruger baseball field was not
present in the cold misty air. The field look good and the faithful started to show up for the
game.
Mr. Rangel brought his favorite chair and sat in his normal slot just left of the home plate.
He likes the spot he said " you get to see the pitches a lot better and you see how the
pitchers work the game, also the plays at home look good".
Mr. Rangel look good and was kin in asking about the other teams I had visited this spring.
We did not get into the process of Little League or Pony League but the field everyone is
claiming carries his name.
I got to the ball park as the crew were finishing with the painting of the field. I saw and
watched the Nixon players arrive and their green and while baseball uniform started to fill
the first base dugout. Here at Krueger it is a true dug out.
I got my thoughts together and went in and looked for Coach Colin. The last time I spoke
with him in length was during the softball season. Here and there we would chat after a
Nixon football game but this was the first time I had a chance to speak to him in detail and
this time he had time and he has now taken over the baseball program at Laredo Nixon.
I started to ask about his daughter Robyn Colin who is now playing for Texas A&M
International University. As we traded information on NCAA parent material. He felt his
daughter was as we both agreed in the best softball program. Robyn is close to home and
in a team that will need her talents as a catcher real soon.
I went into when he took over the baseball program, when Coach Gomez retired from
baseball coaching. Coach Colin said " as soon as I was allowed I went throughout the
campus and through the communications department at Nixon we started to announce the
try outs for the baseball program".
Coach Colin went on to say " I am starting to follow my feeder schools and have made
contact with development leagues in our district and boundaries to start to form a strong
feeder program".
The coaching staff at Nixon now has Coach Justin Meza a state champion in high school
baseball while he was at Corpus Christie Moody. While Coach Colin is forming his staff
and development program. Laredo Nixon has several things going for it's program.
Several key seniors pitchers are coming into their own and have attracted several NCAA
Div 1 & 2 and two year programs are going to see the development of the senior this year.
Today they faced a Laredo United Longhorn team coming from a most successful season
in 2009. The goal was to established a feel for the team and see who commands certain
positions. While most of the key positions are set there are several they were still trying to
try out several players.
The pitching this early on is at the most interesting. Since all coaches will only use their
pitchers two innings at the most in cases. While the district season is several weeks way.
Setting up the pitching rotation starts in these early games for most coaches.
While starting a new baseball program takes time. This time around Coach Colin brings
his years in the playoffs to the diamond. While few in Laredo have more years coaching.
Not many have developed the talent like Coach Colin has.
How his top three pitchers do will determine how the Mustangs will do. They will play in a
tough district. In which baseball programs have gone to state and have advance deep in
the playoffs year in and year out. This time though a new coach new players at Laredo
Nixon will bring something new to the game of baseball Laredo style.
The Mustangs 2010 baseball team will find out real quick where they stand. They will enter
the 2010 Border Olympics tournament full of optimism undefeated with a new coach and
his coaching staff. All that is left is to "Play Ball". See you at the games.
The Laredo United Longhorns 2010 baseball team start their spring season with perhaps one of the most recruited
left handed pitcher in South Texas. What team surrounds the pitcher first basemen is what Coach Gomez has to
figure out. So far this very early 2010 baseball season the Longhorns have a mini victory over Laredo Alexander in
spring baseball game. Considering that Laredo Alexander 2010 baseball team is considered one of the top teams in
Region IV. Laredo United continued their winning ways against them this past week. Perhaps it's not time yet to
dethrone the state finalist and the regions best team the last two years.

Watching the Longhorns warming up for their pre-season game
against Laredo Nixon. Several things come into focus real quick. This
is a high school baseball program that has gone to state and
conquered region IV the last two years with a load of talented ball
players.
Has Laredo United slowed down? Not a chance, I spoke with Coach
Gomez during their warm up and some of the things he was saying
might send a warning to the baseball purest in Laredo and south
Texas.
Coach Gomez had to "with much pain" he said "I had to tell over 35
baseball players they did not make the team". This is not just a sign of
the strong pool of players Coach Gomez has to pick from but from the
amount of players available in Laredo, Texas that can play baseball.
As it stands Coach Gomez said " I may
have to form two freshmen teams and let's
see how many games we may get for them
to play".
His JV squad is so loaded with talent that
they are having a hard time breaking into
varsity in 2010. So that tells you a lot of
how so far his varsity squad is a set of
gifted and talented ball players.
The Longhorns have the task of each
game having at their A+ game. Since
everyone in district will be gunning for
them as they have the last three years.
More this year since most feel this is a
rebuilding year for the Longhorns.
This marks also Coach Gomez first year
coaching without his son in the lineup.
Something we both talked about. Since his
son is in transition in NCAA Div 1 baseball
he will have to face the season without JJ
Gomez around the diamond.
Coach went on to say " I am working on
getting our team ready for the season.
While most of my key positions are set.

There is a lot of competition for each position. Once we get our full pitching rotation set up before district will we
know where we stand". A task they will need to follow since 2010 brings a district that will feature Laredo Alexander
with perhaps the best pitching rotation in South Texas and a defensive team matching their best team ever at
Alexander.
At the same time the Eagle Plass Eagles look so strong and this year Eagle Pass Winn has several new players and
a new attitude in their early pre-season that will generate some interests.
Laredo United South has a new coach
in former Alexander Coach Perkins.
While they are some changes taking
place the Panthers will be interesting
to watch.
Having to face the best teams in
district makes the 2010 Longhorns
sharpen their horns and skills. This is
not going to be easy for anyone in
district 29 5A but one thing the
Longhorns have is the best record
going back the last three years.
The Longhorns have a proven coach
a proven system of getting their
players ready to play district and the
playoffs. All they have to do is 'Play
Ball". See you at the games.

Recruiting For Baseball Myths
My son can play at any university.
My son is the best in my town.
My son has major league talent
Well lets look at the last one " My son has major league talent".
No one including myself can say or speak for a major league team. Except major league scouts , coaches and front
office employees.
I had three sons that played and as a parent I felt all three could play anywhere.
As time went by and they reached high school . Things got interesting .
For one the talent pool got tougher with each team they faced. The talent was way above on most of the players
playing in the position my sons were playing.
Not one of them was a pitcher so that limited the number of chances they got to be seen by scouts.
They look for pitchers first always. If your son is a pitcher and left handed your chances of getting someone to look at
his talent level is encouraging.
If your son is throwing 86 to 89 MPH or higher he will be looked at. If he is throwing at that speed and he is over six feet
tall the chances get better.
If he is throwing 89 to 94 mph and is 6'2" he is being looked at.
If your son is a pitcher and is throwing below 86 mph he is not being looked at. More if he is under six feet tall. Even if
he is left handed.
That is reality. They do not look at position players as much as they do pitchers. Your son will have to have an
explosive bat for them to look at him.
What is an explosive bat? A ball that is hit off the bat each EACH TIME I mean EACH TIME he hits you can tell the ball
just takes off the bat. Even on foul balls tips etc you see the difference if your son is not.
It has a lot to do with hand to eye coordination that allows for a batter to have a ball exploded off the bat.
Here is the killer. Even if your son hits .400 as a batting average does not mean a thing to the scouts at both the Pros
or university Scouts.
University scouts look at pitchers, pitchers, pitchers, pitchers first. Then what ever position they are weak in they will
look for a say second basemen or a short stop but they do not go get the best shortstop even if available if they
already have a short stop and a back up which what most universities have in their teams.
So, now do you see how hard it is to have someone look at your son. So the best thing is to send them to camps.
Sounds like a given right. Well, there are only two things about this. Two types of camps.
The first one we will not discuss much today but the Pro Baseball Camps are the most attended with the most attending
than the universities. The Pro camps are always either free or there is a small fee .
At the university level they all charge and some times the fee is hefty. More if the camp is by an established major
university baseball team.
Take a university camp near your home. It does not matter if it is a Division One, Two or Three. After all everyone
seems to feel their son has all the talent in the world right. Well, attending a university camp early on even if you go for
two to three years in a row until they are seniors. The better the chances those coaches will have a better look at your
son. Second, many times coaches change at the universities so its best to go each year leading up to his senior year.
From those camps you will find the most beneficial information about the talent level of your son. Sometimes those
camps are brutal when they do not even ask to talk to your son after the camp. Or the coaches do not even talk to the
parents at all during and after the camp. But if they are interested they will talk to the player then the parent.
Most camps at universities now offer a scouting sheet on each participant . It tells you how they saw your sons baseball
talent. If your son goes to one of the camps as a freshman they will say what is good and what is bad and what is very
bad about your sons ability to play baseball for their program.
Do not confuse one camp with the other. The coaches will evaluate each baseball player according to their needs etc.
So if a coach says your son baseball path speed is not up to par . It means he is not up to par.
Most camps now do not worry about how fast they are from home to first base They work on how fast is the player at
60 yards. They run the camps that way. They run them several times to get the best time your son can run 60 yards. If
the speed is not up to par then he will be scouted as slow speed or below average speed.
So so far we have two distinct baseball player your son should fall under. One is he a pitcher. Second is he a position
player.
So take notice now. Is your son six feet two inches tall and can throw 86 to 94 MPH and is he left handed. Then your
son has a chance to be considered. He joins are you ready , he joins millions that are six feet two inches tall and can
throw 86 to 94 mph. He is one of so many. Now you see the bigger picture.
Is your son six feet to six feet two inches tall and have a strong arm and has an explosive bat. Then he is considered a
baseball prospect. Now, he joins the millions that are six feet with a strong arm and explosive bat.
Take it one more horrible step. What position does he play. Of course the more the better right. Wrong. Position
players are ranked. They look at catchers first then first basemen shortstops third basemen second basement. In the
outfield they look at center fielders first right fielders second and then left fielders.
Center field you have to have the ability to run back and forth and make plays with a strong arm. Right field a strong
arm and able to hit the cut of men. Left fielder speed ability to make plays and strong arm.
SO now your son is a position player . Well, it gets tougher . There more players in this group trying out for the same
position across the nation. By the billions in way . Way to many out there. So if your son has the ability to be as strong
as the rest of the nation then your position playing son will be scouted
With so many prospects going to camps makes sense. 99% of the time your son will not be scouted just because he is
a good baseball player. He will be scouted if he is above the rest of the millions. Even then it will be millions that your
son will have to face to make one team in a university much less pros.
So where do you think your sons talent may rest. The first step is knowing the reasons they look at players then make
sure that is where your son talents fall.
My suggestion . Stop being a scout be a parent and support your son. Let the scouting to the scouts. Take your son to
camps and find out from independent coaches telling you where your sons talents are. From there take it with a grain
of salt and face the other millions doing the same and see where your next step is.
What Scouts ALWAYS look for. Players that hustle all of the time and show an undying desire to play and compete.
Baseball players with confidence and respecting everyone around you. How you take the field will separate you from
many other players. If you are paying attention to the game you will always be the first person on and off of the field.
Do not let anyone out hustle you and you will get noticed because you play with a passion for the game. Every ground
ball you hit run at full speed and challenge yourself to get the best home to first time every time you hit a ball. Don't
stand and watch or go on cruise control or throw equipment. Make up is a huge for scouts and colleges. Great players
that are great examples of how to act at all times, be it on or off of the field. Good players respect the game, their
parents, their teachers, their peers, and the opposition at all times. You never know when someone is listening or
watching you that could be helpful in your career.
